Treating trichomonas infection

Treatment of TV is simple and usually involves taking a dose of antibiotics.

Your partner should also be treated, and you will both usually be asked to return to the clinic for another test a week or so later to check that the infection has been successfully treated.

Trichomonas infection treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Always tell the doctor or nurse if you are pregnant or think you might be, or if you are breastfeeding. This may affect the type of treatment that you are given.

Trichomonas infection treatment and the oral contraceptive pill

Some antibiotic tablets used to treat TV interact with the Oral Contraceptive Pill and may stop it working properly to prevent pregnancy.

Tell your doctor or nurse what contraception you are using.

Avoiding re-infection or infecting others during treatment

It is important to avoid having sex until you and your partner have both finished treatment, and are given the ‘all clear’ by the doctor. Otherwise you could be re-infected.
