I am Dr Rak Nandwani, I am a Consultant on sexually transmitted infections and HIV in Glasgow. So what I do is see patients, members of the public can come in, usually referring themselves with either concerns about sexual infections or to provide care and treatment for that.

What attracted me about working in the field of sexual health and HIV is that you are very privileged to be able to talk to people about confidential and sensitive matters including their sex lives and in addition people are often young,so you can make them better and often cure them and I really enjoy meeting people so its definitely a good thing to do that with.

On the days that I am in the clinics, well often in the morning I may well be in an HIV clinic, so I will be seeing people that have got the HIV infection, they can be from a range of backgrounds sometimes they can be quite unwell and require to come in but often it is about making sure everything is going well including therapy for HIV infection.

It’s very important that we do offer a confidential service because anything you say to staff in a sexual health clinic stays between you and them. They’re not going to go and tell people in your family or even your GP if you don’t want them to, it’s just really a very private service that’s available and the reason for doing that is that it is a personal sensitive matter and so the confidentiality is actually safe-guarded to make sure that you do have complete anonymity if you want that.
