Longer-lasting contraception

Longer-lasting contraception lasts from 3 to 10 years, are the most effective methods of preventing pregnancy and, once fitted, that's it - no worries!

Even better, if you want to start a family, you can have them removed and be fertile again within a few days.

No wonder 1 in 25 women in Scotland already use them.

Find out about three main types here and discover if longer-lasting contraception could be right for you.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

Also known as 'the coil', they're made of copper and plastic, are quickly fitted inside the womb and last for up to ten years.

Intrauterine System (IUS)

Also known as Mirena, these small, T-shaped plastic devices release hormones inside the womb to prevent pregnancy for up to five years.

Implant

Also known as Implanon, a tiny tube that goes under the skin on your arm and releases a hormone to stop you getting pregnant for up to three years.
